CMI Admissions 2015: MSc/PhD
Chennai Mathematical Institute is a centre of excellence for teaching and research in the mathematical sciences. Founded in 1989 as part of the SPIC Science Foundation, it has been an autonomous institute since 1996.
Applications for August, 2015 are open. Look up the Application Procedure for details on how to apply. The last date for handing in completed forms is Friday, April 17, 2015.
You may apply online or request a printed application form, either by post or in person.

Entrance examination schedule
The entrance examinations on Monday, May 18, 2015, are scheduled as follows:
Morning session, 09:30-12:30
BSc (common exam for BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computer Science, and BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Physics)
Afternoon session, 14:00-17:00
MSc/PhD Mathematics
MSc/PhD Computer Science
MSc Applications of Mathematics
PhD Physics
Applying to multiple MSc/PhD programmes
You can apply to at most one of the three PhD programmes: PhD Mathematics, PhD Computer Science and PhD Physics.
If you apply for any of the three PhD programmes, you must write the entrance exam for that programme.
You cannot apply to any other programmes in combination with PhD Physics.
You can apply for PhD in Mathematics in combination with MSc Mathematics. There is a common entrance exam for both categories.
You can apply for PhD in Computer Science in combination with MSc Computer Science. There is a common entrance exam for both categories.
You can apply to any combination of the three MSc programmes: MSc Mathematics, MSc Computer Science and MSc Applications of Mathematics.
Since all three entrance examinations are at the same time, you can select the subject in which you will write the entrance examination. For the other programmes, you will be short listed and called for an interview based on your performance in the exam that you write.
Application fees
Application fees must be paid by DD, in favour of Chennai Mathematical Institute, drawn on any bank, payable at Chennai.
If you request a printed application form, the application fee is Rs 700 for all categories of applications, including applications for multiple MSc/PhD programmes. The DD should be sent along with your request for a form: see above.
For online BSc applications, the application fee is Rs 600.
The application fee has to be sent along with a printed Payment Advice generated through the application form. Instructions are provided as part of the application form.
For online MSc/PhD applications, there are four categories of subjects
Category 1: MSc and/or PhD Mathematics
Category 2: MSc Application of Mathematics
Category 3: MSc and/or PhD Computer Science
Category 4: PhD Physics
If you apply in a single category, the application fee is Rs 600. If you apply in more than one cateory, the fee is Rs 700. The exact fee payable will be displayed when you fill out the application form.
The application fee has to be sent along with a printed Payment Advice generated through the application form. Instructions are provided as part of the application form.
Admit Card
Admit Cards will be available online from 1 May, 2015.
There is no photograph or signature required for the Admit Card. You will have to carry a print out of the Admit Card to the Test Centre along with a photo-identity card. The photo-identity card can be a government issued document like a passport, or an identity card, or a letter attested by your school/college/employer.

Note: There is a common entrance examination for both the B.Sc. (Hons.) programmes. You need not select your course at the time of applying. The choice can be made after admission.

B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics and Physics: 12th standard or equivalent.
M.Sc. in Mathematics: B.Sc.(Math)/B.Math/B.Stat/B.E./B.Tech.
M.Sc. in Applications of Mathematics: B.Sc.(Math/Physics/Statistics)/B.Math/B.Stat/B.E./B.Tech.
M.Sc. in Computer Science: B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(C.S.)/B.C.A. or B.Sc.(Math) with a strong background in C.S.
Ph.D. in Mathematics: B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(Math)/M.Sc.(Math).
Ph.D. in Computer Science: B.E/B.Tech/M.Sc.(C.S.)/M.C.A.
Ph.D. in Physics: B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(Physics)/M.Sc.(Physics).
How to Apply

For all the programmes, applicants will have to take an entrance examination on Monday, 18 May, 2015. The entrance examination centres for 2015 are as follows: Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Kolkata, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune, Ranchi, Shillong, Silchar, Srinagar and Trivandrum.
Selection for all Ph.D. programmes will involve an interview at Chennai. For all other programmes, interviews will be at the discretion of the Admissions Committee—the Committee may call shortlisted candidates for an interview depending on their prior academic record.
All students receive handsome scholarships that meet all expenses. B.Sc. (Hons.) students receive a scholarship of Rs. 4000 per month, M.Sc. students receive a scholarship of Rs. 6000 per month and Ph.D. scholarships start at Rs. 16000 per month. Students of B.Sc. (Hons.) also receive an additional monthly scholarship of Rs. 1000, made possible through generous private donations.

Qualify for PhD Mathematics via NBHM
Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Mathematics at CMI for the academic year starting August 2015 can qualify for the interview without writing the CMI entrance examination if they are been awarded the NBHM PhD Fellowship.
If you wish to apply to the PhD programme in Mathematics at CMI through this channel, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, send an email tophdmath2015@cmi.ac.in attaching a scanned copy of your NBHM scorecard along with your BSc and MSc academic transcripts.
If you qualify directly for the interview based on your performance in these exams, you will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee. If you do not hear from us, you must write the CMI entrance examination in order to qualify.
Qualify for PhD Computer Science via JEST-2015
Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Computer Science at CMI for the academic year starting August 2015 can qualify for the interview on the basis of their performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-2015) in Theoretical Computer Science, without writing the CMI entrance examination.
If you have written JEST-2015 and wish to apply to the PhD programme in Computer Science at CMI, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, send an email tophdcs2015@cmi.ac.in to inform us that you have also written JEST.
If you qualify directly for the interview based on your performance in JEST-2015, You will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee. If you do not hear from us, you must write the CMI entrance examination in order to qualify.
Qualify for PhD Physics via JEST-2015
Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Physics at CMI for the academic year starting August 2015 can qualify for the interview on the basis of their performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-2015) in Physics without writing the CMI entrance examination. Only candidates within the top 300 ranks will qualify through this category.
If you wish to apply to the PhD programme in Physics at CMI through this channel, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, send an email tophdphy2015@cmi.ac.in attaching a scanned copy of your JEST scorecard.
If you qualify directly for the interview based on your performance in these exams, you will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee. If you do not hear from us, you must write the CMI entrance examination in order to qualify.
